Planners seek to reinvent Fresh Kills, the world's largest landfill.

At its peak, the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island "could be seen from outer space because of its 2,200-acre size." Now officials want to transform "the world's largest landfill into park and recreation space." The process could take decades. "Just creating a preliminary blueprint for the changes will take a couple of years...'We hope that this plan, once developed, will provide a template for other landfill and brownfield sites. The city intends Fresh Kills to be recognized internationally as a case study for landfill reclamation,' " says one official.
