Extra grease from Atlanta restaurants fuels the city's growing biodiesel industry.
Del Bueno, an Atlanta musician and environmentalist, has a dream. He wants "to sell restaurant grease as a fuel for diesel engines." There's one big problem though: "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fines people who make biodiesel - up to $25,000 for each day they make it." Yet even with this setback, Bueno's vision is slowly being realized. The "movement to bridge the D-I-Y crowd with environmentally minded business people and rural politicians" has one backer willing "to supply [Bueno] with 2,500 gallons a week of used restaurant grease." He's also working with a lobbyist to pass laws requiring that diesel fuel contain biodiesel. Can a budding biodieseler beat the big businesses to a buck?
