A 'Growth Audit' examines zoning codes for 26 metro Atlanta cities and counties and found that the zoning codes favor sprawl.
"Rockdale County's zoning codes, like many around metro Atlanta, produce strip malls. They create housing that's near retail shopping but doesn't offer a direct path for walkers, forcing people into their cars... The audit found 10 of the 26 local governments surveyed have specific mixed-use zoning codes. A dozen require sidewalks on both sides of the street within residential developments. Some governments actually require large lots, the opposite of smart growth. Only six allow for compact housing lots smaller than 7,000 square feet."
