"Maryland planners announced yesterday that they have adopted design changes for a proposed east-west highway through the Washington suburbs that they say would make the road less disruptive to wetlands and surrounding neighborhoods.""State transportation officials said the path of the highway, known as the intercounty connector, would be narrower in environmentally sensitive areas so that it would have less impact on the environment. That option would include building much narrower medians and installing guardrails instead of leaving 30 feet of extra land on each side of the pavement as a safety buffer, Maryland highway administrator Neil J. Pedersen said."
