Large Homes On Big Lots--At What Price?

A report by the largest conservation organization in New England ties 'mansionization' to the loss of open spaces in Massachusetts.

A recent report by the Massachusetts Audubon Society finds that "Massachusetts residents are living in ever larger homes on bigger lots, even though fewer people live in each house....The report...also finds that 40 acres of Massachusetts forest, farmland, and open space are being developed every day, about 90 percent of which is being used to build new homes.The report...paints a picture of increasing sprawl where Massachusetts residents live in large suburban houses and commute long distances to work, and a state where affordable housing remains in short supply....Home builders say they're being forced to build on larger lots by communities trying to slow development through zoning regulations....The result, according to the report, is the construction of ever larger homes and lots."
