"As investors make millions and residents make a fuss, planners, who sit awkwardly in between, are being squeezed like cement in brickwork....The problem is that Melbourne 2030, as the blueprint is known, has so far triggered as much discontent as it has solved. Coming on top of a deeply flawed existing urban planning system, 2030 has fine aims but flaky fine-print. It is a combination that has allowed developers to upset the historic feel of inner suburbs with out-of-place building. Then there is the dilemma of the green wedges, the city’s lungs which, despite new laws meant to ensure their survival, are still being eroded."
