Tennessee Highway Safety Agency Launches Anti-Speeding Initiative

The state’s Highway Safety Office will boost enforcement and public awareness in an effort to reduce traffic deaths from speed-related crashes.

A new initiative from the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) takes aim at curbing speed-related crashes with increased enforcement and a public safety campaign this month. Adrian Mojica reports on the program, which also calls on drivers to report unsafe behavior.

“In a statement release on the operation, Col. Matt Perry with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) says ‘The THP is combatting a drastic escalation in speeding that has led directly to an increase in traffic fatalities.’” As part of the initiative, called Slow Down Tennessee, “The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and local law enforcement statewide will increase saturation patrols, conduct high visibility enforcement, and utilize other tactics to curb speeding drivers,” the THSO website states.

“According to data recorded by the Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), from 2020-2022 there were over 28,000 traffic crashes in the state involving speeding, racing, reckless driving, or aggressive driving.” This correlates with an overall increase in traffic deaths nationwide.
