Many Families of WTC Victims Do Not Support Memorial Designs

One of the competition guidelines set by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is to include "footprints" of the towers, angered many family members, "who have asked that the buildings structural remnantsnamely, the box-beam columns that remained after the towers collapsedbe preserved, not simply visible, at 70 feet below sidewalk level....no design succeeded in offering maximum access to both tower sites at the bedrock level." Although many are hopeful that the winning design can be modified to fit their needs, the "soon-to-reopen underground PATH train station is already infringing upon the South Tower footprint, and construction would encroach on the footprints at bedrock level. The LMDC has indicated that the preservation of the structural footprints at that level is unlikely."
