Concerns about the local costs of over-55s moving to Australian beachside locations.

Increasing cost pressures will be felt by regional/coastal local governments as large numbers of over-55s retire to lifestyle locations, according to the 2003 State of the Regions report. The report warns that higher unemployment rates and increased demand for aged care facilities, combined with the lost revenue from the rates rebate for pensioners, will cut into local council budgets.
