Planners and public health officials ought to work together to design walkable neighborhoods.

The theory says that if people have access to sidewalks or bike paths from their homes to retail shops or offices, they'll use them and get a health benefit -- even through casual walks. And if they're driving less, they're also emitting fewer pollutants into the air and reducing their chances for car crashes and pedestrian deaths, some public health experts and doctors say.
