Orange County's Roads Tolls for Thee

Orange County's experiments with private toll roads is meeting with mixed success. But politicians are increasingly calling for making the toll roads free.

The 91 Freeway is the only privately-owned freeway in the state, running from the Riverside County line into Orange County, and is bordered on both sides by backed-up freeways. Three other toll roads totaling 51 miles in length in Orange County are also encountering mixed success. Assembly member Rod Pacheco (R-Riverside) introduced a bill to purchase the "Express Lanes" toll road from the California Private Transportation Company (CPTC). His bill was shot down to doing a study of making Orange County's toll roads public again. An Orange County Supervisor has proposed that the state buy all four roads and eliminate all tolls.
