The State of Michigan will decide whether or not mobile home residents are currently paying their fair share for road repairs, schools and public services.
Local government officials in Michigan are seeking to gain more control over the siting of mobile home developments, which is a power currently held by the state, as well as increasing fees from residents. Residents of mobile homes currently pay a flat fee instead of property taxes. "Developers and others in the manufactured-housing industry say they're worried that giving all decision-making to local governments will make it too hard to build manufactured housing developments." The manufactured-housing industry also points out that mobile home residents already pay a sales tax when they purchase their homes, as well as pay rent for their lots "which covers property taxes paid by development owners."
