Thanks to a booming economy and declining crime rate, Fresno is selected as one of the National Civic League's 10 All-American Cities. Santa Clarita is California's runner-up. The All-America City Award annually honors 10 communities that best exemplify the spirit of grassroots citizen involvement and community building. Fresno is the only California city that was recognized. The other ten All-America Cities for the year 2000 are: lower Naugatuck Valley, Connecticut; Worcester, Massachusetts; Montgomery County, Maryland; Clinton, Missouri; Gastonia, North Carolina; Fargo/Moorhead – North Dakota/Minnesota; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Anderson County, South Carolina; and Edinburg, Texas.
