Two developers, one who is deaf, present plans for a new town in South Dakota for sign language users. The town would follow the model of Gorham's Bluff, Alabama.
Working with Dover, Kohl and Partners, a new town is in the works for McCook County in South Dakota serving both deaf and hearing sign language users. The town would embody best of New Urbanist principles: "The plan starts with a few businesses - a gas station, a hotel and a restaurant or two - and when the development is complete, it would offer a variety of retail businesses and industries catering to hearing-impaired residents." a school designed to educate both deaf and hearing children in immersive sign language and English environment is also part of the plan.
