HUD "estimates that 1.5 million Americans aged 62 and older are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless....The government says that although the elderly comprise only 10 percent of the homeless, their presence is increasing....Their plight is described as 'economic homelessness.' They stretch their fixed incomes to cover necessities--housing, food, medicine--leaving themselves vulnerable to homelessness when those costs rise, illness strikes or a spouse dies."
