Uninhabited Island Is a Contentious Site

The Army Corps of Engineers and the Audubon Society are among the stakeholders who are blocking the development of housing on an uninhabited island.

A developer is proposing a large development of log cabin vacation homes on uninhabited Plum Island in Illinois. Despite many assurances from the developer, "the opposition to the housing development has been intense." There are some, such as the Save Plum Island coalition that is against the development because it would harm the eco-system and cut tourism revenue. For others, like the Audubon Society, the development is a threat to the bald eagles who live there in the winter. Still, others are against the development because it is suspected to be an ancient burial ground. Finally, the Army Corps of Engineers are concerned about their easements on the island.
