A Response To Reason's 'Hot Air' Transit Projections

Michael D. Setty responds to the Reason Foundation's recent article charging that transit projections are frequently 'hot air.'

"Checking available statistics shows that Cliff Slater [writing for the Reason Foundation] is the one full of hot air, not the Honolulu transit planners who are using common sense and planning major measures such as "bus rapid transit" to make transit more attractive by reversing the current decline in transit operating speeds... Readily available transit statistics show what is really going on, rendering Slater's discussion of computerized travel models irrelevant (he doesn't state what projected population increases are in the forecast period, which certainly accounts for a large chunk of the projected patronage increases).
