History shows immigrants can have a major influence on urban areas. In the 19th century, immigrants came to America by the thousands and changed cities through new demands for housing, entertainment, and unique commercial opportunities..." To illustrate how planners can address multiculturalism and use it as a revitalization tool, Practicing Planner Kristin E. Sosnicki-Campbell, AICP, shares her experience working in Utica, New York: "Utica was hit hard by a depressed economy in the 1990s, but its economic conditions and social fabric have rebounded with the help of immigrants who are injecting optimism and energy into the city. After years of recession in Utica, there is now a sense of optimism in the air."
