St. Louis' older suburbs are copying traditional city neighborhoods in an effort to attract residents.
"The trend, a form of New Urbanism, comes as the region's inner-ring suburbs are seeking their place amid continued development westward - and even new growth in the Metro East... These new, mixed-use developments also are serving as a way to reuse abandoned or decaying commercial sites. In Kirkwood, a town square is emerging on land once occupied by a Target Corp. store, while Brentwood will build a community on the site of a former Serta Mattress Co. operation."
