SALA Homes (Sustainable Affordable Living Australia) are developing a retirement village incorporating the model sustainable homes which are expected to be available as kit homes from March 2004. The houses are designed so that they are kept cooler by natural ventilation. Solar panels on the roof generate the electricity, with any surplus being sold to the state’s electricity grid. Local authorities also benefit with less strain on local services – the houses have rainwater tanks and sewerage and wastewater are collected, treated and reused on site.
