New residents in Portland's Boise neighborhood have experienced some of the 'bad old days' of late, and their response has miffed police and the established neighborhood association. "During the urban decay of the 1980s, Boise children were familiar with the sound of gunfire. But those days are supposed to be over, say the young, upscale residents who have helped spur a neighborhood revival that has driven down crime in recent years.The Boise neighborhood's new residents are learning that there is nothing like a surge of gunfire and crime to shatter the complacency that comes with gentrification."
