Canada stands alone among G8 countries in not having a substantial portion of urban transportation infrastructure funded nationally by the federal government. Chronic underfunding of Canadian transit systems has hindered necessary expansions to meet growing demand and led to Canadians having the highest rates of user pay in the world. According to urban thinker David Pecaut, one of the most closely watched parts of the prime minister's first Speech from the Throne on monday "will be how it addresses the needs of Canada's large cities."
