The Detroit News presents a comprehensive and well-illustrated evaluation of Detroit's progress in "beautifying" the city.
"With two years remaining before Detroit hosts Super Bowl XL, the all-out effort to give the city a makeover in time for the game is progressing in some areas but sputtering in others. Event planners and city officials have a long way to go to achieve many of the improvements outlined after the NFL awarded Detroit the game in November 2000. The pressure is on to pull off the event without the national media and attendees turning Detroit into a national punch line to jokes about cold weather, carjackings and urban blight. To gain the full economic benefit of the event, visitors must extend their stay to several days and spread money around restaurants, bars and other area attractions."
