The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $95 million in Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) awards to 55 Native American and Alaskan Native communities around the country. The grants are targeted to “infrastructure, community facilities, housing rehabilitation, economic development,” and other related projects.
According to a description of the grant program in HUD’s press release, “Eligible activities include housing rehabilitation, land acquisition, roads, water and sewer facilities, and single or multipurpose community buildings.”
Recipient communities include seven Alaskan groups, the Sault Ste Marie Housing Authority in Michigan, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, the Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Housing Authority in South Dakota, and others for projects such as affordable housing renovation and rehabilitation, elder housing, and community wellness centers and parks.
