Quality Design Should Be Available For All

A call for improved design quality in Australia, one of the most urbanised countries in the world.

"Design for All" is one of the themes for 2004, the Year of the Built Environment in Australia. Chris Johnson, the NSW Government Architect, discusses the need for a quality-designed built environment in cities, suburbs, coastal and country areas. He concludes that "good quality, liveable, sustainable environments should be a natural expectation for everybody". Suggested YBE initiatives include a national urban centres policy and new local government built environment policies that recognise design quality with faster approvals processes.
