The Economics of Rail Transit Funding

North Salt Lake commuter rail line given green light from federal government.

The federal government has agreed to share the costs of building a 43-mile, nine-station commuter rail line from Pleasant View to downtown Salt Lake City. The Weber-Salt Lake line is one of 34 projects to be funded in fiscal year 2005. The lower cost of acquiring right-of-ways in the sparsely populated West offsets the lower projected ridership compared to other projects. The UTA estimates an average of 8400 weekday boardings.
