A Chicago suburb seeks to enhance opportunities and infrastructure for bicyclists.
The city's legal department is reviewing the proposed zoning change, which will likely come before the City Council in March. As proposed, it would require new businesses or apartment complexes -- or existing buildings that expand by more than 10 percent -- to include parking for bicycles based on the amount of parking provided for automobiles. If a new business requires a 100-space parking lot, it would have to include parking for at least five bicycles. For places likely to attract more bicycle riders, such as a swim club or community center, the percentage of bicycle parking jumps to 10 percent.
