Sprawl threatens the long term viability of cities around the world.
According to Dr. Matthew Hardy of the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture &Urbanism, "modernist ideas which led to the creation of urban sprawl were an aberration arriving after thousands of years of traditional urban structures." The application of the "scientific" approach to urban planning, which rationalises city form, has led to the usage of "limited conceptual structures and crude [policy] controls." Solving the sprawl problemwhich took most of the last century to createwill be a major issue for city and national governments in the coming century.
