Accessory Units Are Welcome Addition To Portland-Area Development

An Oregon City developer provides affordable housing option in new housing project -- despite his own market preference.

By mere coincidence, Oregon City developer Mark Handris's 38 home Glen Oak Meadows project will feature 19 above-garage accessory rental units, also known as granny flats. Although Handris prefers to follow the "tried and tested" market for single family homes, he has the support of city officials and potential buyers to construct the higher density housing option often used for elderly parents, college students, or as rental property. Accessory units in other area developments have been well received, but future demand is still uncertain and often not a developers first choice.
