Reason Foundation's new report, 'Great Rail Disasters: The Impact of Rail Transit on Urban Livability,' profiles San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento and 18 other U.S. cities that have or are planning light-or heavy-rail transit systems. "Besides faulting the cost-effectiveness of the systems, the report says the environmental benefits of rail transit have been overblown... As cost-effective alternatives to rail projects, the Reason Foundation advocates bus rapid transit systems and special high-occupancy/toll freeway lanes." The full study examines rail transit in 23 cities across the country, and is produced by Reason Foundation and the Center for the American Dream.
