Office Space Squeeze

A new report has found a drop in average workspace ratios in inner-city office markets.

The Property Council of Australia's latest Office Market Report has found a drop in the average workspace ratio in inner-city offices to 21 square metres (about 226 square feet) per person, down from 31sqm (about 333sq feet) in 1992. Workspace ratios are calculated by measuring all of the space taken up by an organisation and dividing it by the number of employees. Accordingly, a reduction in workspace ratios reflects smaller foyers, boardrooms, reception areas, training and storage rooms etc. It also reflects newer workplace trends of hot-desking and open-plan workstations.
