Southern California isn't the only region worried about Wal-Mart Supercenters.
The action in the Utah grocery market is heating up. In an effort to improve performance and stay competitive, Kroger Company will rebrand Fred Meyer stores as Smith's Marketplace. In addition to the $7.5 million conversion of five stores, three more stores along the Wasatch Front and a regional office will be closed. Industry observers credit these difficult decisions to the increasing presence of Wal-Mart in the area. Wal-Mart currently operates 33 stores in Utah, including seven Sam's club warehouses.
