While construction continues on the San Diego Convention Center, its board is ready to commission new studies for a bigger facility.
When the San Diego Convention Center opens its $216 million second phase in September 2001, it will have more than 615,000 square feet of exhibit space. But this is less than that of convention centers in other large cities. Officials are talking about a third phase. Nine cities across the country will boast facilities with 1 million square feet or more by 2003. To compete with convention centers in cities like San Francisco and Las Vegas, San Diego is looking at a possible expansion.
