Highway Bill Passage Linked to 9/11 Investigation and to Election

Two senators are controversially using a Highway Bill to extend the 9/11 commission investigation.

As the existing extension of the Highway Bill is set to expire this Sunday, Department of Transportation workers may face a furlough on Monday. The reason: Senators Leiberman and McCain are using the highway bill as leverage to achieve an extension of the 9/11 Commission investigation, which needs more time to complete its work. The senators are being criticized for "seeking to hold hostage the whole highway progam in the United States." The 9/11 investigation results may now be released much closer to the presidential election this fall.
