Traffic deaths were 3.3 percent lower in the first half of 2023 than the same period last year, but not all states saw the same results.

According to an article from The Associated Press, traffic deaths fell by 3.3 percent in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year, per numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The agency estimated 19,515 deaths in traffic crashes in the first part of 2023, compared with 20,190 in 2022. The second quarter of 2023 marks the fifth straight quarter that traffic fatalities have fallen.
The decline has not been even across the board: the NHTSA estimated that fatalities fell in 29 states and rose in 21 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
The agency says there is “significantly more work to be done” to eliminate traffic deaths altogether.
