Households headed by singles are beginning to outnumber families in big-city suburbs, and will undoubtedly change the face of the American suburban landscape.

"Across the country...singles headed more suburban homes than traditional families for the first time in the 2000 U.S. Census....The shift has sparked changes in everything from the kinds of homes people buy to the types of businesses that dominate once sleepy downtowns....Communities built decades ago to serve traditional families are bustling with new restaurants, condominiums and nightclubs....The growing population of singles covers all age groups, from twentysomethings to solo seniors, demographers say."
