"A long-simmering philosophical dispute over Oakland County’s plan to widen Interstate 75 prompted the county to cut Ferndale from its Main Street program, which helps communities revitalize aging downtowns. Ferndale officials, led by City Manager Tom Barwin, have for years argued against widening I-75 because they believe a larger thoroughfare will further fuel urban sprawl by ushering residents into undeveloped areas. But Dennis Toffolo, director of the county’s Community and Economic Development Department, said Ferndale’s unwavering stance against the project interferes with the county’s initiative. 'It’s counterproductive. (Barwin’s) opinions are costing his residents and the county money,' Toffolo said. 'I have limited resources, and if (Barwin) doesn’t want to appreciate it, I’ll go somewhere else with my money.'"
