Community is cut off from Main Street program after opposing a freeway widening plan.
"A long-simmering philosophical dispute over Oakland Countys plan to widen Interstate 75 prompted the county to cut Ferndale from its Main Street program, which helps communities revitalize aging downtowns. Ferndale officials, led by City Manager Tom Barwin, have for years argued against widening I-75 because they believe a larger thoroughfare will further fuel urban sprawl by ushering residents into undeveloped areas. But Dennis Toffolo, director of the countys Community and Economic Development Department, said Ferndales unwavering stance against the project interferes with the countys initiative. 'Its counterproductive. (Barwins) opinions are costing his residents and the county money,' Toffolo said. 'I have limited resources, and if (Barwin) doesnt want to appreciate it, Ill go somewhere else with my money.'"
