A combination of ingenuity, 80's space technology, and grass-roots support is bringing the public transport of the future to Santa Cruz, California. SolTrain, an ultralight solar-powered vehicle and personal rapid transit (PRT) maybe be hitting the local beaches, downtown, and university soon. Getting the local government on board is the next step. 'The line between wacky and visionary is thin,' Santa Cruz Vice-Mayor Mike Rotkin said. 'But if the private sector comes to us with an offer to build the whole thing without public funds, we should be ready to do it.' "
