Surprisingly, for a small island with a high population, high-rise living has never really caught on in Britain. High rise residential developments got a bad name in the UK following development in the 1960s. "In the 60s they were poor quality construction, there was no management regime and their security got broken down over time, so the places became uninhabitable." Now, however, apartment (flat) dwelling is increasingly attractive as inner city living is experiencing a renaissance due to rocketing land prices and a reduction in household size. Architects and developers are again looking upwards to accommodate that demand.
