UTA in Salt Lake buys used train cars at a savings of $2 million apiece.
Thanks to a deal with the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority, the Utah Transit Authority was able to double their light-rail fleet and save $64 million. SCVTA is getting a whole new fleet, so they sold their used rail cars to UTA for $500,000 each, as opposed to $2,500,000 new. The 29 new trains will allow for more frequent service and longer trains for special events such as Utah Jazz games, U of U football games, and concerts. All of the cars will first have to be modified to match the UTA tracks, stations, and platforms.
