Boston city planners and public health officials are eyeing new open space created by the Big Dig as a way to promote active lifestyles and fight obesity.
The Big Dig is the largest highway construction project in the country. But the fact that the road was built underground has opened up land above that could be used for recreation and neighborhood connection. "Bostonians will be more likely to exercise daily if there are paths that parallel familiar city streets, connect neighborhoods to recreational sites -- and lead to more practical destinations.
