A New Airport for Las Vegas

Senate approves a bill to allow construction of a new airport in the Mojave Desert outside of Las Vegas.

The plan was met with numerous objections by environmentalists concerned about urban sprawl. The airport's planned location is a dry lake bed in the Ivanpah Valley, near Interstate 15 and six miles from the California state line. The site is near railroad cargo tracks that may be used one day for high-speed trains between Las Vegas and Southern California. Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the nation, and Las Vegas' current McCarran International Airport will be at capacity within 10 years.
