"Gordon Brown has sanctioned an assault on the countryside and the vitality of market town high streets by insisting that the ban on out-of-town shopping centres should be relaxed. The Chancellor has made his decision under pressure from major retailers such as Tesco, B&Q, Asda and Ikea, sweeping aside strong opposition from John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister."
