A survey of British towns finds significant threats from "uniform" new development.
A recent "audit" of British towns conducted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England concludes that many areas are in danger of losing their character due to increasing auto use and declining local retail. The report states that "the quality, character and distinctiveness of market towns and their surrounding countryside is a huge economic asset which provides opportunity and competitive advantage. It is important that this is recognised, and that development which undermines this rural potential, damages the environment or the character of market towns and their surrounding countryside, is rejected."
