Volunteers work to save above ground cemeteries in New Orleans.
The above ground cemeteries in New Orleans are a unique and famous part of the city's atmosphere. The oldest cemetery, St. Louis No. 1, is over 200 years. However, many of them are falling apart and have no living relatives to care for them. They are subject to intense weather, including flooding, hurricanes, and scorching summer temperatures, and they are visited by over 100,000 tourists a year. The non-profit organization Save Our Cemeteries is using volunteers and expert preservationists to make sure this part of the city's legacy endures.
