Anaheim, Garden Grove Duel Over Hotels

Anaheim has been slow to react to a Disney expansion, but neighboring Garden Grove has moved quickly to meet the need for new hotels.

Anaheim has invested $546 million in public improvements around Disneyland and the new park adjacent to Disneyland, called the California Adventure. Part of Anaheim's plan was to recover these costs through "bed" taxes on new hotel rooms which were to be built in Anaheim. But the hotels have faced a lack of interest by developers and design problems. Meanwhile, Garden Grove, has moved quickly to assemble land and build several new hotels just down the street from Disneyland. Now Garden Grove is poised to reap the benefit of Anaheim's investment.
