The rapid growth in air travel could wipe out any improvement in greenhouse gas emissions.

Widely accessible cheap flights have revolutionized the way that people travel. Cheap flights are a benefit to many travellers, but air travel also imposes certain external costs on the environment which are being absorbed by all of us. A coherent political program is needed to rationalize the way that humanity values our environment. "Real political leadership is always about persuading people to forgo things for the general good." "Charging the real environmental cost of cheap air travel" will be a challenge that must be met.
