Kingston University in Surrey, England sets up the world's first research institute to study suburban life.
The world's first Centre for Suburban Studies is being launched in Britain this week, dedicated to deconstructing the semi-detached house, analysing the culture of the net curtain... The centre's director is Vesna Goldsworthy, a Yugoslavian-born English literature lecturer who lives in Chiswick, west London. She believes suburban Britain has been patronised and pitied: 'In Europe, people want to move closer in to the city centre and live in smart flats. In Britain, everyone wants to move further out and live in a house.' "
