"City officials gave vinyl siding a reprieve Monday night, dropping the idea of a ban that had drawn flak across Central Indiana.

The City Council proposal to ban the material, which some local officials labeled as cheap, prompted a scolding from homeowners and builders who saw the move as elitist.

Ultimately, the council voted to make vinyl and aluminum siding harder to use, but did not add them to the list of items -- such as billboards -- banned in Carmel, the affluent northern neighbor of Indianapolis."
