Bitter contest ends with record voter turnout and in favor of existing leadership.

The country's most influential environmental group has surfaced temporarily from a controversy that matches it size. At issue is immigration-- should the Sierra Club support stricter controls on immigration and reduce the impact of population growth on the environment. This weeks board elections were the battleground for this debate. "The club's leaders said the dissident candidates were "stealth" outsiders taking advantage of the group's liberal membership rules to seize control. They charged that some racist groups had encouraged members to join the club to promote an anti-immigration platform." Opponents of immigration question the club's management and the fairness of its elections.
